Hello!

Another month of my EVS has passed : a month filled with friends, travels and so much more.

It all began with a Bulgarian event on the national bulgarian holiday 3rd of March. Bulgarians from all over Finland gathered in the multicultural center of Pori, Finland where we introduced Bulgaria, its culture and food to people from all over the world. Together we enjoyed the nostalgic taste of traditional Bulgarian cuisine, the rhythm of Bulgarian folk music and we even danced a little bit. I had the chance to meet even more people from my country and it felt so sureal to speak in my mother tongue. I also helped create a small workshop for martenitsa (a small piece of adornment, made of white and red yarn and worn from March 1 until the appearance of the first blooming tree or the first stork.)

A couple of days later I was sleeping on a bench in Helsinki airport 😀
I had a very early flight and I hadn´t thought how would I get there so early in the morning when I bought the ticket so that resulted in one extremely uncomfortable night. Couple of hours later I was in London waiting for my best friend – Almina, who I hadn´t seen in 3 months, to arrive. The reunion was happy and we spend the day sightseeing, the evening on a ghost tour and the night on a bus to Liverpool, where two very dear friends of ours were studying.

Liverpool was not what expected. It had amazing charm. It was really beautiful and the fact that my friends were living there made it all the more interesting to me. I bought a lot of stuff while there. I visited a lot of museums, galleries and churches. I spent as much time as I could with my friends because none of us knew when we will se each other again. All in all, these were one of the best three days in my life.

Afterwards, me and my best friend had two more days in London before flying to Helsinki. So, we decided to try out couchsurfing. I shoul say, I was a bit worried but it turned out it was for nothing. Our host was simply amazing. We had similar interests, she was super accommodating and she even showed us around London one of the days. A surprising thing for me was how much we walked. Almina had a pedometer and for these two days we walked more than 50km. I felt so proud of ourselves and of the fact that we managed to sees o much of London in such a short time.

In Helsinki another friend of ours was waiting for us – Maria. Then the three of us went to Pori. We spent a couple of days here and had a bit of rehabilitation time. After which, Maria went back to Bulgaria and me and Almina went to Rovaniemi.

Rovaniemi was not as cold as I expected. The sun was blindingly shiney. And I saw the northern lights. Unfortunately, my phone camera is not the best so I couldn´t take a picture. The next day we basically spent in Arktikum – an enormous museum that taught us a lot about Lapland, the people that have lived there, the animals who till this day inhabit the land and so much more. To sum it up, Rovaniemi was a surprising adventure that will leave me with lots of amazing memories.

The beauty of Oulu was also not lost on us. I had heard it is a beautiful city, but the old part of the city definately took my breath away. I would love to go back there in the summer and see all the parks that were now covered in snow.

I can´t wait to chose the next destination. I might have started travelling after I turned 18 but I plan to make up with even more travels in the upcoming years. At the begining of my project, I moght not have travelled much but that was because of the cold weather. Now that it is becoming warmer, I would love to go to as many places as possible both inside and outside Finland.

I am really thankful for the opportunities EVS is giving me. At the end of this project, I will have so many memories left not only of Finland and the people here, but from other countries and people from all over the world as well and that is one hell of an experience.

Thank you for the time and attention!

Wish you all the best!

– Verzhinia, EVS-volunteer
