I’m Bea, from Spain, and I’m living in Kokemäki since February, making an EVS program. I’m working in Harjavalta with young people at the youth house, between other places.
I’ve been in Finland almost 3 months, but for me has been like two weeks. Everything is going so fast that I can’t even notice it.
The first days were perfect, everyone from the hosting organization (Sataedu) and from the work were really kind, everytime trying to let us feel our self at home and sharing tips from the Finnish culture with us. Although everyone told me that the finnish people is really shy and close, my first impressions are not like this at all!
I would like to share in this post my first experience making hiking because I think is one of the experiences when you can really feel Finland from the inside.
I really was looking forward these days since I knew that I was going to make it, but also I was a little bit worry because I never did that before and I knew that it can be really tired, and also because of the cold…but hopefully everything was perfect! Of course you have to be prepared for the weather because everything can happens here in Finland, I think that this is the most important part for making hiking. Althought I have to say that at night was freezing!
The best part was when I was literally walking in the middle of the forest, with nothing sourrround you but trees, moss and ground. Is in this moment when you can really feel part of the nature, and not something unaware of it. You can appreciate the sounds, the smell, the textures… everything.
You can not feel this just from your window, looking from the outside, or throught your screen phone, giving likes to landscapes pictures that you wouldn’t mind to go but the lazyness beats your as always. And at the end you prefer to stay at home than go out and discover new things and places.
With this I want to say that I really encourage everybody to go abroad, discover new places, new people, new points of view and also things about yourself that you wouldn’t discover in your hometown. One year ago I wouldn’t say that I love hiking, in fact I’m used to be quite lazy…but now is diferent.
I’m still feeling a lot of spectation about how are going to be the next 7 months, but is not like in the first days, that I didn’t know anything about Finland and about how it was going to be my life here. Currently I could say that I found my place here.
